The Masters in Creative Writing at the University of Glasgow has an astonishing track record, with alumni including Louise Welsh, Zoë Strachan, Rachel Seiffert, Anne Donovan and many others who have gone on to make their mark on contemporary literature. The Research Club is a chance to judge for yourself who among the current crop is destined for similar success.
The best of the writing to come through the course this year – as chosen by writers Rodge Glass and Liz Lochhead, agent Maggie McKernan and The Herald’s literary editor Rosemary Goring – The Research Club contains poems, short stories and novel extracts ranging from the hilarious to the disturbing but all sharing an unfailingly high quality. Writers included in last year’s anthology – Outside of a Dog . . . – are already making inroads into national success, as evidenced by Eleanor Thom’s receipt of the £5000 New Writing Ventures Award 2006 for her featured novel-in-progress, Burns.
The Research Club is a preview of important voices on the eve of their break into the wider world of contemporary literature. It is a shortcut for anyone interested in the shape of British writing in future years.
